Bad Beat

After the flop, turn, or river, a player who initially had a large numerical advantage over an opponent, loses his hand over the opponent.

Bad Beat Story

It is a retelling of a bad beat or repetition of it. Many people know the end of these bad beat stories. For instance, there is an ace-king, and there is 2-3 for my opponent. On the board, there is an ace. The turn is a 4, and the river is a 5.

Big Blind

The number of chips must be bet on by the second player to the left of the dealer. The sum is based on the stakes. It is a posted number, like an ante, that makes the pot worth playing before the game begins. It is equal to the first round bet. It is called a blind bet because the bet is placed without looking at the cards.

Call

To add the minimum amount of money to the pot required to keep on playing a hand.

Check

It is used for a bet to pass. If the player doesn’t have an action (bet), then there is nothing to call. He can only check if he doesn’t want to bet any further. If there is subsequent action in the betting round from the opponents, the action will come back to him to either call, fold or raise.

Check-Raise

When a player checks on the first chance to bet and later raises any following bet in the same betting round, a check-raise occurs.

Cold Call

It takes place when a player calls two or more bets on his turn. If he bets and raises a pot until it hits him, and then he calls, it is cold calling.

Connector

These are sequential pocket cards. A six of hearts and five of clubs is a connector. The term suited connector is used if the connectors are the same suit. Like, 5 and 6 of clubs.

Dealer

The player who mixes the deck and distributes the cards.

Dealer button

A button that locates the dealer (a plastic disc in live poker). After every side, it is passed in a clockwise direction.

Draw

It is the move that takes place in the anticipation to improve the remaining in hand. e.g. A player needs one or more cards for a flush or a straight if he has nothing substantial at the moment. If he calls (or raises) a betting round to get much-needed cards, it is called “drawing.” Straight draws and flush draws are the two most common draws. Also, a player can draw for a kind of three, a full house.

Draw out

It is when a player receives a card that can transform a losing hand to a winning hand.

Flop

It occurs when the first three community cards are distributed after completing the first round of betting.

Flush

A poker hand of five cards in the same suit.

Fold

To give up by putting your cards on the table face down, losing everything you’ve bet so far. When you think your side is too bad to contend against the other players should you fold?

James Patterson

Four of a kind

A hand with all four cards of the same rank in it.

Full house

A hand that consists of a kind of three and a different pair.

Gutshot

This is a term used when a straight is completed by one likely card from the inside. e.g. In a situation where the player has 5 and 6 pocket cards, with a flop of 4-8 king, and a 7, then only a 7 will be able to complete the gutshot straight on the river or a turn. A gunshot tends to hit half as an open-ended straight. Play online poker games and know more of such terms.

Hand

A combination of a player’s community cards and pocket cards makes five cards in total a hand.

Heads up

When the game is against only one player in a tournament of a pot.

Implied odds

When you draw something and take into account potential calls from your opponents are the implied odds. If you are successful in the drawing, you expect them to call with their hands as well. These funds are hypothetical and not definite since they are not yet in the centre and will not be until you hit your card, and they call your bets “implied.”

Kicker

In a situation where a player has the same hand as his opponent at the showdown, the one who has the highest kicker wins the game. If the table is 7-7-5-5-2, and you have an ace-king, and your opponent has king-queen, you win because your ace defeats his king. Your ace is the “kicker.” The only silver lining between winning and losing in this instance is the highest card that completes a five-card hand.

Limp

It implies that the move is not aggressive and is slang for calling.

Limit

When the bets and raises culminate at a fixed amount in a game structure.

Muck

When a hand has all the discarded cards, the player tosses his hand and folds it into a muck.

No-limit

When the players bet their entire stack in a game structure, there is no limit in the maximum that you can bet, but the minimum limit is to notice while betting.

Nuts

This is the ideal hand one can ask for in a game. If you have pocket 7’s, for instance, and the flop is 7-6-2, at this stage you have the “nuts” as the best possible hand will be trip 7’s. You will no longer have the nuts if the turn card was a 5, as that honour now falls to someone carrying 8-9, making a straight. If the river were the last seven, you’d have the nuts again, because your side is the best possible hand again.

Off-suit

To hold pocket cards of various suits to play online poker games.

Omaha

A range of hold ’em in which players obtain 4 hole cards and need to use exactly two of them to make a hand, along with 3 of the 5 board cards.

Open-handed

A group of games that are distinguished by a portion of the hand of each player being revealed.

Over-pair

A pair in the hole in hold’em, which is bigger than any group card on the board.

Open-ended

A straight one completed by one of two potential cards from the outside. e.g., if your pocket cards are 5-6 and the flop shows 4-7-king, it will complete your open-ended straight with either a 3 or an 8 on the turn or river. Twice as likely to strike as a “gutshot.” is an open-ended straight.

Orbit

It is a complete orbit when a button passes every player at the table after being all done acting as a dealer for a hand.

Pair

When the two cards are of the same rank.

Pocket cards

These are the cards in your hand and are not a part of the community cards. They are also known as hole cards. It is a two-down card in Hold ’em, and four down-cards in Omaha.

Pot-committed

When a situation arises that requires the players to call due to the remaining chips or the amount of money in a pot, there is no use to fold in such a situation.

Pot-limit

It is a game structure in which the bets and raises depend on the pot’s current size.

Quads

Four of the same kind of cards.

Rainbow

When it is a flop with no two cards matching the same suit, in a flop game.

Rake

When the house can pull some cash out of a poker hand.

Ring game

It is a standard poker game to wager money during each hand.

River

It is the final card of the five community cards.

Rock

This is slang to determine a “strong” player. Rock tends to sit at a table without playing for a pot orbit after orbit. He can move the mountains if he enters a pot.

Raise

It is the term for adding more amounts or wager the minimum call required. It forces the players to stack up more money in the bet.

Royal flush

It is an ace-high straight flush, an ideal hand in online poker.

Semi-bluff

If the bluff goes unsuccessful, a bluff with a side that has the capacity to modify.

Set

Getting a pocket pair on the board that hits, creating three of a kind.

Short stack

To have lesser chips at the table or in the tournament than the majority of the players.

Showdown

The players can switch their hands face-up after the final round of wagering. It is a showdown at only one condition when there are callers in the last round to bet, or if anyone is all-in before the last betting round.

Side pot

Detached from the main pot. The pot to which the all-in players have added is the primary pot whether one or more players are all-in. A side pot is generated by the remaining players from any additional cash bet. If there is more than one all-in match, there can be lots of side pots. Only an all-in player is qualified to win a pot he has contributed to.

Tilt

A player “on tilt” when he plays hastily, usually due to taking a bad beat or a series of bad beats. The word probably comes from the tilting of a pinball machine.

Time

Requesting more thinking time. To prevent the dealer from killing the hand due to inactivity, a player may call for time or time-out. In comparison, the other players who want to keep the game going can have a “clock” called on them by a player who takes excessive time to make decisions.

Top pair

A pair on the board with the highest card. e.g., if you have an ace and 7 in the hole, and it’s a flop of 3-4-7, you have a “top pair” with an ace kicker. If you had in your wallet a pair larger than seven, it is an over-pair.

Under the gun

The player in the first-to-act role is seated. It’s the location for subsequent betting rounds immediately to the left of the wide blind, pre-flop, and the left of the bell.
